What kind of laptop can I get with these features?
Question Posted Saturday August 3 2013, 7:22 pm
I want a laptop that I can download music on & burn to CD, have Microsoft word & powerpoint for school, games & built in security & under $1,000. What laptop has these features?
The main expense is Word and the other office tools, although you probably get a special discount price. There are free alternatives, notably "OpenOffice". You'll need to check if your school will accept reports and stuff done with these tools. If it will, then you can save a bundle.
"Security" is tougher. Depends on what you mean. If you mean viruses and stuff, well - I use a Mac. The best security is not installing stuff that you download from the internet.
But overall, one machine is pretty much the same as another these days. The only difference is memory, speed, and storage capacity, which get cheaper every year. $1000 won't buy you a decent gaming machine, but it will definitely get you something to type school assignments into. Go online and see what Dell has ready to go in what they show as pre-configured. They build each computer to order but the configurations they show and price are standards. You can also modify their standard builds, just follow their options in build it yourself.
One time I needed a far from standard computer for a project. I worked with one of their specialists and we were able to build what I needed for about half the price I was being quoted by local build specialists.
Given the popularity of Tablets today I believe you will find the laptop you're looking for at a price far below what your willing to pay. In fact for what you're willing to pay you can upgrade almost everything on one of their laptops and still be close to what you're willing to pay. just go to dell.com. I had a toshiba that was pretty nice, I would recommend it for a cheap brand. There are a ton of computers that meet your criteria so it might be good for you to just browse around online or go to an electronics store and see what you like. I like Best Buy for computers since you get the Geek Squad coverage and everything.
If you want something that you can download games on to, you may want to consider a mac (pricey) or a windows 8 computer (less pricey and you can get one with a touch screen!), since they have their own places that you can buy and download games. I believe that they both have built in security and I know they can both do MS word/powerpoint.
