dancing: What is contemparary dancing and what is jazz dance?

Question Posted Saturday June 1 2013, 10:32 am

I'm a 13 year old girl and I used to do hip hop but I'm over that now. What is contemparary dancing and what is jazz? The lady who taught ме hip hop teaches those also. I can't do a handstand/cartwheel or the splits and I'm not that flexible. Do I need to be able to do that to do contemp/ jazz

Thanks x

solidadvice4teens answered Sunday June 2 2013, 10:41 pm:
The best thing to do is call up your instructor who taught you hip-hop and teaches the other disciplines. Ask her what contemporary dancing is to her and what he jazz program incorporates.

She knows what you cannot do with flexibility and the demand of those programs and if they suit you. She would be honesty about what she thinks you could or couldn't do.

I would start with her and then do some more research by talking to old classmates, references of the instructor, parents of classmates and get their view of the program before deciding.

Also ask your former instructor if you can sit in or take a trial class to see if it's your thing or not.
