Why is a low BMI dangerous if you aren't starving yourself?
Question Posted Friday April 12 2013, 11:14 am
I was reading online that if your BMI is "dangerously" low your organs could fail and it's deadly. My BMI is 16.3 but I'm just skinny. I eat 6-7 small meals a day so I don't get hungry. I literally eat every 3 hours. How is that dangerous? And why would your organs fail or why would you die if you aren't starving yourself?
People who are on the extreme edges of body types can find it incredibly inaccurate. What's right for one person isn't necessarily right for another, and being at a certain point on the scale doesn't necessarily mean that you're unhealthy.
Everyone's healthy weight is different. If I was to aim for your BMI, I'd have to weigh about 110 lbs. That would be super unhealthy for me: my "happy" weight lies around 170 lbs, because I'm naturally muscular. However, if you were to weigh 170 lbs, it would probably be very unhealthy for your body type. I've also known very underweight women who eat total garbage and don't exercise, and obese women (myself included) who exercise regularly and eat lots of healthy foods. Weight isn't necessarily an indicator of overall health.
So don't worry unless your doctor tells you that you should. You probably just have a very small build. As long as you're eating healthy and eating enough you should be fine. [ NinjaNeer's advice column | Ask NinjaNeer A Question ]
