Can a person get scammed when buying something off of ebay or craigslist?

Question Posted Tuesday August 7 2012, 8:35 pm

I want to buy somehing but I don't want to get scammed and buy something of poor quality and not get my money back. I'm afraid maybe if I pay I won't get it or it won't be as good as it looked on the internet. What are the chances of gettin scammed on ebay or craigslist?

I actually would go with ebay all the way. There are seller ratings and reviews in place there to help prevent scamming. So if you find something you want to buy, search it up first at a few other well-know online shopping sites, and compare it to the product listed at ebay. Then look at the seller info. They should say where the item was manufactured at and when. Keep in mind the prices. If you find a pair of new Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers for $20, unless they're used, they're knock-offs.

But don't let that scare your off. I got myself a new cellphone (a Palm Pixi Plus) off of ebay for $40. It was a very good deal and I don't regret it, since my phone is working quite nicely.

Hope this helps!

I wouldn't use craigslist, especially for something expensive.

I use ebay, because it is much easier and safer. You can see a sellers feedback, to see how good they are. You can also get your money back easily if you do get scammed (if you pay by paypal).

So it really depends. You need to use your judgement. Obviously if someone is offering a grand piano for $1, it's a scam.

Keep in mind that products from China/Hong Kong generally will be a lower quality, but cheap. My friend ordered a bag from Hong Kong. It was only $4. She got it a month later, and you could tell it was cheaply made. But $4, what does one expect?

I'm sure there are plenty of quality sellers from other countries, but from experience, home sellers have best quality.

Good luck!

I would never buy anything off Craigslist or Ebay, They are the top two places people false advertise. If you want to buy something I would definitely stay away from the internet and buy it from someone you know or in a store.
