I do know that when you get your ears pierced they use a special kind of earring. (Usually earrings made of nickle or 14k gold)

If they use a gun to pierce them (instead of a needle, like piercing parlours do), the earring has to have a pointed post. It also has to be thicker than most earring posts, because you have to hold the hole open.
