My sister at one time had a Russian exchange student that we all fell in love with. In fact this young lady adopted all of us and calls my Uncle and my sister mom. She is now married and just had her first child. My sister has from the start corresponded with this girl's mother on a regular basis.

I would suggest you write to her as you would anyone else who is a friend with just a slight difference. You start by introducing yourself and telling her about yourself. You then answer any questions she may have asked in the messages passed to you. Then you go on to tell her about you and her son and how well he treats you. You finish by thanking her for raising someone so kind an thoughtful.

I'm not sure if they celebrate mothers day in Russia but since it will be mothers day here shortly you may want to tell her about Mother's Day and wish her a happy mothers day as well.

-Be shy and very respectfull
-Be so friendly at the same time
a good start is "Hello! How's everything going in russia?! Hope u're having good times!"
Talk about the stuff she talked about in her letters and at the end say that you pray for her and you love her and hope you see her soon
Gd luck
