Do I have to give the police a statement? Do I need a lawyer?

This involves the unauthorised use of a credit card. I hav admitted to the offence to the owner of card and Hav paid the sum back. Other party does not wish to press charges but police hav requested I giv a formal statement. Do I hav to if no charges are going to be laid.I am from Australia

Not knowing the laws in Australia it is hard to answer this question. I would think if you have laws against self incrimination you could not be forced to make that kind of statement. Here in the USA we could not be forced to make that kind of statement.

My suggestion is that you check with a Lawyer before making any type of incriminating statement to the police.
