i feel jelous sometimes: How do I stop comparing myself to others?
Question Posted Friday April 6 2012, 5:36 pm
I'm 16/f and I have a younger sister who is 14 but she is really mature and is a spitting image of my mum.. I know this will sound horrid but sometimes I can't help feeling jelous of them both:( my sister gets so much attention off boys and my mum was a model- it just makes me feel really ugly. My mum and sister are tall and blonde and I'm just average height and have brown hair that always goes frizzy, I never tan and my skin looks horrible next to my sisters. My mum is so so so so skinny and makes me look fat.. really, I need advice to stop comparing myself with them?
You said your sister attracts more guys than you? Have you ever thought that your sister and you don't have the same interest in similar guys? Maybe she likes those guys, but you don't. Why would you be jealous of her having guys that aren't even your type? Think about it this way. What is she doing that gets all this attention? is she more outgoing and social? Try getting out a little more. Go do some fun things with your girl friends and maybe you'll get to meet some new guys on the way. Just be yourself, but don't be too shy.
Studies prove that when you compare yourself to others, you get negative about yourself and that can cause serious disorders such as depression or even suicide. Not trying to scare you haha but just saying look on the bright side :) I suggest writing a list of good positive things about you. Eventually you can smile and be proud of those things. Maybe some of those things are something that your mom or sister doesn't have, and you can be proud of that because they should be jealous of you, not the other way around.
Everyone is beautiful in their own way. Embrace it :)

If now you feel inadequate at average height, be thankful you're not short.
There is nothing wrong with brown hair. You can always get those anti-frizz leave-in conditioners and avoid curlers/straighteners. Why does your skin look horrible?
Beauty isn't skin deep. You don't have to be a model to be attractive and every type of girl has a type of guy to be admired by. It is natural to compare yourself with these people you're with everyday whom you feel are better looking than you but do remember that you just have to accept things you can't change (skin since you can't tan) and own them! Own that fair skin, treat your hair and let it flow (if you have long hair which sounds like you do) like in the ads.
If you won't grow, wear heels. I'm pretty short (a little over 5ft) but eventually I got used to it. Heels!
So what if your mum is skinny? Surely, you're not fat. If her slimness makes you LOOK fat then I guess you know you're not fat. So focus on that. The only way you can stop comparing yourself with them is to build your self-confidence and belief you're just as hot. A lot of that depends on you and your mindset. Work on that and you'll be fine.
