Being a premium member brings a lot of benefits, depending on the hotel. Like you say, it can be good breakfasts, or discounted meals, free local calls, discounted minibar use, and other free or discounted stuff.
Like I say, it ensures that people stay loyal to the hotel by receiving discounted rates and other features. Its also good if you travel a lot and stay at the same brand of hotels when you do.
