So I don't have very high self esteem, and I want to feel really pretty for my birthday, I'm tall 5"8 and I have brown hair that falls at my shoulders, it's not very long and very layered, I want to do cute vintage pin curls but I don't know how to do it, I'm dying my hair a chocolate brown and I thought it would look pretty curled, I don't own a small curling iron and I don't have any styling products. any tips or any other ideas I could try? My birthday is in a few days and I want to look cute, I bought a new outfit and everything, I'll be turning 18 and I think my friend is throwing me a surprise party seeing as she is being obvious about it, I want to look cute for it because I'm sure she invited my guy friend I like. Please help?? (:

Rollers came be bought for a fairly low price (depends on quality). I've even bought some from the dollar store. If you want tighter curls, I recommend using a roller that has a wire inside of thick (this curls REALLY fast for me- I leave it in for about 3-4 hours because overnight is too much), bendable foam or one that I can't describe really well (here's a link to a picture of one: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)). If you are trying to get looser waves, there are zig zag looking foam rollers. These are ones that I have tried and have worked for me, but keep in mind that there are many other types of well recommended hair rollers.
Another way that might damage your hair slightly more is to braid little sections of your hair while it's slightly damp and wait until this dries (or as I do when I'm in a rush, just straighten the braid until it's dry-this is the more damaging part). I don't recommend doing this very often because it damages your hair more than the other ways (especially because braiding while it's wet tugs on your hair when it's most sensitive). Depending on the size of the braids (the smaller the braid, the tighter the curls), you could get tight curls or loose waves.
Last but not least, there is the classic rag or pin curlers. These are ways that women before the generation of heated hair curlers did their hair. For pin curls, it didn't work well for me because I have thick ish hair and not very strong bobby pins but ehow has a pretty good how to pg for pin curls ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)). As for the rag curls, there have been many variations of this. I've read and watched countless tutorials on how to do it but the best so far has been Michelle Phan's tutorial on youtube (she uses paper bags in the video, but cloth like an old pillow case works too). Here's the link: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Anyways, these are a few of the ways I curl my hair without using heat. Some have failed for me, others work wonders. The best thing for you to do is try a few and see what works best for you. Good luck and have a great birthday :) [ mannequin24's advice column | Ask mannequin24 A Question ]
