Ok, so my family and I are currently planning to buy a horse for me. We already know where we are going to board her but is there anything I should know about this? What should I buy for her? I know I need tack and grooming stuff, blankets, all that. Byt is there anything else??? Thanks!
Lots and lots of hay. You'll probably feed her quite a bit of hay. Depending if she's going to be on grass 24/7 or if your in Florida you have the oh-so-wonderful sand. lol.
Your vet can answer a lot of these questions. Also the owner of your barn that your keeping her in can definitely help you. Ask for lessons (even if your a good rider already, it never hurts to get a lesson to keep improving!!!)
DragonFire31 answered Wednesday February 29 2012, 11:25 pm: How old is the horse you will be getting? What breed are you getting?
You will want to make sure that you have the correct gear for him/her.
Is the horse already broke? If so you need to find out what type of gear he/she was broke/trained on.
I had two horses one was a paint that was trained on a hackamore and the other she was a quarter trained on a bit.
Also when purchasing your saddle are you wanting to do western riding or other?
There is sooo much information that goes with having a horse. A horse is nothing like having a pet dog, cat etc etc.
Get as much information as you can from the people you will be purchasing her/him from.
Food wise, hay is a good starter, check into alfalfa for him/her. However do not feed alfalfa all the time this is a every once in a while food.
You can also every once in a while feed him/her sweetfeed. Seriously though it is a way to learn as you go. If you have any questions regarding this go to your vet see if they care for large animals and if they do ask them questions they should be able to help you out. Good luck. Will check back from time to time to see if you answered any of my other questions. PS you will love your horse. I miss mine so very much.
