Unexplained memory loss & innability to associate faces with names
Question Posted Sunday January 15 2012, 12:34 pm
I'm a sixteen year old girl, and, for the past three years, I have been dealing with unexplained memory loss and difficulty with facial recognition. This problem of mine began in 2009 when I started having difficulty visualizing events that I should be able to remember (like birthday parties and family trips). My parents didn't take me seriously, so I tried to ignore it. By mid-2010, however, all of my memories of everything prior to 2008 had vanished. At this point, I've learned to cope with it.. I just figured that, if I'm happy and successful today, my past isn't a big deal. It bothers me, though, because not only do I have to live in the constant fear of losing my memory again, but it also takes me anywhere from days to months to create a mental ties between faces and their corresponding names. I've tried to find an explanation for this for a while now, but everything I read said that my memory loss could be the result of a head injury or substance abuse, which doesn't make sense yet again because I've never taken drugs or alcohol in my life and I don't think I've ever had a head injury. Since I didn't seek medical help when I first noted these memory problems, I know that it's probably too late to try and retrieve my memories, but if anyone knows anything about this, I'd really like to be able to understand... :/
There are three things that come to my mind that could be the cause of your problem.
1. You may have suffered a small stroke sometime in 2009.
2. You may have suffered some type of internal concussion, meaning your brain sloshed around in your head from a force like a car accident and may have caused a small undiagnosed bleed. (this happened to me in an auto accident causing memory loss)
3. This is the big one. You could have a small tumor.
Any of the 3 things I am thinking of are easily diagnosed with an MRI or CT scan. Because as I feel what your suffering could be life threatening a hospital must treat you regardless of whether you have insurance.
If you are unable to pay or your parents are unable to pay for your treatment there are programs to cover you hospital and medical bills. Children are especially covered by these programs.
By law at 16 years of age you do not need parental permission to seek medical treatment.
I do not mean to scare you with my uneducated guesses of what could be causing you memory problems. I could be very wrong with my guesses or very right. It doesn't matter. What matters is that I motivate you to see a doctor and get a definitive diagnoses. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]
