Im nervous about moving away to college

Question Posted Friday November 11 2011, 7:09 pm

I got accepted into college and Im leaving in July.I live with my mom and we are extremely close. I chose a college that is far enough away, but close enough, maybe about 6 hours away.
Im nervous about people might not liking me or I might mess up doing something. I dont know anyone in the city that Im going to and I dont know how i'll get around, maybe the bus
Im actually extremely nervous. Im not used to sharing anything or having roomates, I dont know if they might like me. Im really quiet around people I first meet and it takes a while to come out of my shell.

but how can I hold my own in college, and prove to my mom Im going to be ok?

I'm going to say what lots of people have probably already said to you, you're in the same position as hundreds of others. Its very rare that when you go to college you already have friends, everyone makes them there. The best way to do that is when you first sit next to someone, introduce yourself. I know that sounds difficult when you're shy but its not as bad as it seems. Plus, everyone there will be desperate for someone just to talk to them.
As for living with people, its something that takes getting used to but you soon will; and its also very fun! The worst thing you can do at the start is sit alone in your room, if you have a common area, make sure you use it, especially on the first couple of days.
I wouldn't worry about people not liking you, there are all sorts of people at college and the chances of you not being able to find at least one person whom you get on with are next to nothing.
If your worried about your relationship with your mum changing, don't let it. I'm sure she wouldn't mind getting phonecalls from you at anytime if you just needed a chat.
The best overall statement that i can give you is that it is a big change and it will take some time getting used to it but its worth it and you make the type of friends you keep for life.
I hope you really enjoy it x
