Money and the postgraduate affair

Question Posted Monday August 15 2011, 11:33 pm

How do I start from scratch? as in a job? make money and become independent?

college experience has taught me nothing but anxiety and dread of bills. i lived paycheck to paycheck so no savings...

I am talking no money to my name, no place, about 5000$ credit card debt, recently lost my scholarship (which payed for home, pocket money, school, food...etc), and no job prospects.

I just finished my masters in media but can't find a job that would hire me... somehow everything I've found related to "media" comes up as information technology, programming, or journalism. Which is nothing close to what I do... My BA background is in Art (conceptual, and photography)... I had something in mind like art director or photo or media director but I lack the experience, and don't know where to start to get into that feild...

Everything i've taken delves in theory, i need practical skills... so how do i get that if the jobs that offer it want "experience" first?

I can't even get a job at my local dunkin... and how exactly will that help me develop in my field? should i get something like to earn income then figure it out or what? wing it vs plan it? how?

my temp solution is to go back to my hometown and live with my parents for a while (i know very embarrassing for a 23 yro)... 'cept i don't know where to go from there... any ideas?

how do I plan this???? My dad is freaking out and butting into my business... and since he pretty much is going to be feeding and housing me i am sort of stuck listening to what he approves of and what he doesn't... (which ultimately i have to listen to if i were to keep things civil living with my 'rents)

If you have to move back in with your parents for a little while, that's nothing to be embarrassed about. Everyone struggles from time to time, trust me. I know from experience. I saw on the news a while back that it's been really hard lately for recent college graduates to get a job in their chosen field when they're right out of college, so you're definitely not the only one going through this. If I were you I would continue looking for a job in your chosen fields, but you may want to take another job in something else just to make ends meet for a little while until a better opportunity comes along.

If you have the time, you may also want to consider trying to get an internship somewhere. They're usually not paid, but it'll give you some experience in your field for when you start applying for jobs. Also, if you can, maybe you could try to find a "starter" job (can't think of the word I'm looking for) in your field, and try to work your way up from there.
