Do you have the discipline for it? Being in a band is basically a job. You have scheduled times to show up (for practice), you rehearse a certain number of hours and you try to manufacture product (songs).

Or do you mean you just want to mess about on instruments with your friends when you're in the mood? And how well can you guys play? If you are all beginners I would suggest learning your instruments for at least six months before you try to begin assembling a set list and writing songs.

In any event, go to the forums on Harmony Central and Ultimate Guitar for information about being in bands, songwriting, etc. Lots of good and often hilarious information/commentary.

Should you start a band? If you really want to, why not.

Of course first steps include:

1. Identifying what kind of band you want to be i.e. what genre e.g. Rock, Punk, Jazz, whatever

2. Finding people who can play instruments well, and can put in the time.

3. finding somewhere to practice e.g. a garage, or a friends house: wherever it is. It will be noisy however, so inform people around the area

4. practice, practice, practice: its the only way to get sound good.

5. Record what you practice e.g. a full song. Listen back and see what you can improve on

6. Get family and other friends to listen so they can give you advice.

7. Perform (it will be for free, especially as you are so young and new) at places such as your school, or other events. Local bars usually look for bands, but this is not applicable to you because of your age.

If your or your friends dont have instruments, or cant sing or whatever, then its probably not best to start a band, simply because a lot of money will need to be spent on instruments, and learning how to play them. So find people that you get along with, that can play instruments, and most importantly, you need to practice with your band.

Hope i helped :)
