Genealogy question: I am trying to figure out what percentage of what I am
Question Posted Monday July 18 2011, 12:26 pm
Okay, this is random but I just wanna know okay :))
I may need a genealogist or whoever knows how to compute these kinds of stuff.
My dad is a full Canadian.
My mom's dad is half Canadian and her mom is a full French. (That'd make her 1/4 Canadian and 3/4 French?)
Anyways, what I'm trying to ask is what is the fraction/percentage of my French and Canadian roots?
Growing up I usually say I'm 1/4 French and 3/4 Canadian but is that really the right computation?
When I add a full Canadian (1) with a (1/4) Canadian, mathematically, that'd make be 5/8 Canadian. Doesn't sound cool to say "I'm 5/8 Canadian"
LOL. Really, I'm just curious. And it's hard to explain to other people cause I'm not exactly half French and half Canadian.
So yeah. If you could help me out, that'd be really nice.:)

Here's what I think you would be, but there is a bit of mystery since you don't say what else your mom's father is.
First, your mom is 1/2 French, 1/4 Canadian, and 1/4 whatever else her dad is.
Your mom gives you 1/4 French blood, 1/8 Canadian, and 1/8 whatever else.
Your dad gives you 1/2 Canadian blood.
So, in conclusion you would be, as you said, 5/8 Canadian, 1/4 French (that equals 2/8), and 1/8 whatever else.
What you can say to people is: "I'm mostly Canadian with some French and a little bit of something else." Easy to say without getting technical. But you may want to find out what else your grandfather is. [ Shygirl93's advice column | Ask Shygirl93 A Question ]

This means you still have 1/8 of some mystery nationality since you said your mom's dad is only half Canadian. [ QueenofBlues's advice column | Ask QueenofBlues A Question ]
