Wedding make up product recemendations

Question Posted Saturday July 16 2011, 9:34 am

I'm getting married in 9 months time, the venue has cost more than we expected so we're having to cut costs elsewhere, which means I will be doing my own make up.

I'm 27 years old and I still have no idea about make up, I have very dry skin so I have to put mosturiser on my face, then foundation and it still looks flakey.

This is my main problem so if anyone can recomend any brilliant foundation fo that smooth airbrushed look? I've read about "Primer" too but I have no idea what that is, i'm never used it.

Next i'd like gorgeous eye make up, celebrities wear it a certain way which seems to change the shape of their eyes.

As you can tell i'm completely clueless and desperately need some fab advice.

Thank you

First off, Congrats on the wedding!

I'm a huge make up fan, and when I get married I'll probably do my own make up because only you know what you want to look like on your special day.

If you aren't great at it, I suggest practicing a lot. Google make up looks and try them out. It might take many tries to get what you want.

Have you ever gotten your make up done at one of the counters in the mall? Ususally they do not charge for this, it's just assumed that you will buy one of the products they use on you. You can schedule a consultation and then make an appointment on your wedding day. You can buy perhaps the lip color and mascara they use, and get out of it only spending $40.

If you still want to do it on your own, then here are my tips.

Primer helps your make up stay on longer and go on smoother. I use it every day, and you will definitely want it for your wedding day.

For eye shadow, get Urban Decay's Primer Potion (around $18). It is the best out there.

For your face you can explore and try different things. I use Bare Minerals prime time, and I love it. You can find cheaper options, like from Rimmel, but you might not want to skimp on your wedding day. They have primers for dry skin, oily skin, etc. so look for your skin type.

For your foundation, I suggest a cream foundation. It's thick and covers a lot. I use Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse, which is a drug store brand.

There is a more high end foundation I also reccommend. Makeup Forever HD foundation. The HD products will help you look GREAT in pictures. I suggest the make up forever hd powder on top of everything to set your make up.

You should also use bronzer, which you don't need to spend a lot of money on. Look for a matte (meaning no sparkles) bronzer. This will be natural and give you some color. Use a dark shade to contour. This means to give your face definition. Make a fishy face and apply the bronzer to the hollows beneah your cheeks.

Blush can also be purchased really cheaply. I suggest a cream blush, with a powder blush over top. The combo will create multi-dimensional color as well as hold it down longer.

Pat the cream blush on and very gently blend. If you swirl it on then it will create a 'hole' in your other make up. Go for a color that is close to your natural shade. Wedding make up should be very you, but just enhanced.

For the eyes, I suggest neutral but sparkly colors. You can do to any drug store and find colors that would suit you.

Make sure you put a high light (a very light, shimmery color) on your inner tear ducts and right under your eye brows. This makes you look more awake. Put the darkest color on the outer corner and blend into the crease.

I suggest using colors like warm browns, champagne colors, whites, taupes, maybe a little bit of a plum, or some golds. Keep it simple but radiant.

For eye liner that stays on, I suggest Mac Fluidline in Blacktrack. This is a gel liner that is water proof. Top this off with a black eye shadow to set it.

I strongly suggest wearing fake lashes. You can get a set that looks natural at the drugstore, walmart, sally beauty, or even the high end stores. They take some work to learn to apply, but once you get the hang of it it isn't bad. When you cry you won't have a ton of mascara on your face because you are wearing fake lashes.

Get a waterproof mascara to 'blend' your lashes in with the fake ones. Really test out your mascara, because I've had waterproof ones that are barely waterproof.

For your lips, you can use a lipstain if you want it to last all day. The drug store has lots of them, but I also like Tarte products which are very moisturizing.

I use urban decay Dew Me make up setting spray to set my make up. It's moisturizing, so this might help combat your dry skin through the day.

As for your dry skin, you might want to try a new moisturizer. Philosophy (sold at Sephora) has a raved about moisturizer called Hope in a Jar. I hear it works wonders. If you start this before you wedding, you might be able to eliminate the dry skin problem.

Did you know youtube has a beauty community. There are TONS of users who create make up videos and tutorials which really help me, and they have lots of wedding inspired videos. I think this could help you a lot!

I hope that could help. Good luck!

-Abby

Youtube is your best resource for learning how to do makeup- tons of makeup artists post how-to videos. I learned a lot of what I know on there.

I'll give you some tips and then videos.

First of all, for your face. Do you exfoliate? (At least once a week). If not, now is the time to start. And if when you moisturize, your skin still looks flaky, it just means that your moisturizer isn't doing enough and you need to switch to a more thick, rich cream.

When it comes to doing your wedding makeup, you have two choices: airbrush or liquid.
Airbrush is put on your face using a little machine (sounds weird, but it's pretty easy). It's what's used for most photoshoots and weddings to give that flawless look. It's also good for your skin, waterproof, and very-long wearing. It will require an initial investment and a little time to learn, but I think it's worth it. The easiest to use for beginners is Temptu, which is sold at Sephora.
It's also important to make sure your foundation perfectly matches your skin. Get professionally matched if you haven't already.

If you're going with liquid foundation, not airbrush, you do need a primer- it evens out your skin to make your makeup apply more smoothly and last all day. Too Faced Primed and Poreless is really great. (Again, sold at Sephora.)
The best liquid foundation, especially for when you'll be having your picture taken, is Make Up For Ever HD. (Sephora) It's super popular with makeup artists because it perfects your skin, giving you a glow without looking cakey and fake.
After you apply foundation, you'll want to set it with a powder to make sure it lasts all day. Use a big fluffy brush and a small amount of loose powder- the Make Up For Ever HD setting powder and Laura Mercier translucent powder are both good.

Here's a video on perfect foundation:

If you have any under eye circles, redness or blemishes, you'll want to cover those with concealer before you put the powder on.

The next step is blush- important to have a glow for your wedding day. Since you need it to stay on all day, I'd go with a cream blush in a soft pink- MAC and Urban Decay both make good ones. Then set it with either a little more translucent powder or a subtle blush powder color.

To look like you have radiant, perfect skin, you should highlight your face. Here's a video on how to:

For your eyes, I'm just gonna refer you to a video, but here are some tips, too:
- Make sure you use an eye primer. Urban Decay Primer Potion is pretty popular, but for extreme long-wear (it's waterproof) and making sure your shadow doesn't fade, I lovee Lime Crime Candy Eyed Shadow Helper.

- Curling your lashes before applying mascara is a must! Makes such a big difference.

- And for your wedding day, fake lashes are also a must. They make your eyes look amazing. The best ones are Ardell Demi-Wispies, used with Revlon Precise lash glue. You can get both of those at a drugstore or Ulta. Fake lashes do require some practice, so buy a few pairs (they're super cheap) and practice lots before hand! Here's a how-to: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

- Make sure you're using a variety of decent eye brushes, not just one of those sponge things that comes with a kit.

- Perfect eyebrows are really important, too. If you're not getting them waxed, then at least pluck them and fill them in a little. How-to:

- When your makeup is done, you'll want to use a setting spray to keep it in place- Urban Decay All Nighter is really great.

- If you don't have a lot of eyeshadow, I highly recommend the Urban Decay Naked palette- lots of gorgeous, shimmery neutrals that are perfect for your wedding day.

Now, here's your wedding makeup how-to video:

And if you have any more questions or need any more help, please let me know- I love makeup and have been professionally trained. I think the key for you will be lots of practice. Good luck!

Just a suggestion: Many department stores offer make up consultation in there cosmetic departments. It is free and there is really no obligation to purchase the make they use on you.

You have nine months to visit stores such as Macy's, Lord and Taylor and other fine Department stores and have their make up consultants work with you to find the look you are looking for.
