My son is 4 1/2 years old. He was just recently diagonised with ADHD. Where I live there isnt many children theripists. So were we go he can only get in once a month hes only meet her once and its been two months she rescheduled with us. So I am placing him on home therepy were they come in our home and help with behavioral problems and stuff. Well he seen a medication doctor he asked us a ton of questions and told us he had 7-10 symptoms and since the theripists are limited here they want to place him on medication a small dose to try. its called intruiv (i think i spelled it right) Is there anything else I can do to help my son. He usually talks like an adult but lately hes been talking like a baby (he hasnt started medicine yet it has to be pre autherized) I was also told to make an appt. with SSI since I have limited income and him being diagonised with this I could qualifiy for SSI?
It is a sad story. Yes, you can get paid from the government. Your doctor's note should be enough to get a monthly check.
I say this next part from my heart, and from experience. Do not let them drug your child. Look into safe healing herbs before you result to chemicals for such a young child. I know your doctor will tell you it is safe. That is only because he believes what he is told by the pharmacist that he will get a kickback from when you buy the drug. Medicines released to the public are not tested adequately enough to declare them safe. In fact most drugs given to people are only experimental.
This sounds like you will have increased problems with your son if you put him on this drug. His mood swings will get worse, he will have ups and downs from the sleepiness, and the trouble sleeping, low blood pressure, dizziness, are symptoms consistent with cardiovascular issues (his Heart). Keep in mind that not everyone who experiences these side effects calls the FDA and reports them. So the percentage of people they claim that have these side effects is much larger.
I visited this site [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) that this drug had only been tested in the lab for a 9 week period before it was released. I would not put that in my child's developing system if i were you. Find something more safe.
Here is a link that you should take seriously, as an alternative to pills.
Please do not dismiss this subject based on programmed social prpaganda. These studies are serious, and if you love your son enough, you will take a serious look at how much you can improve his quality of life with this medicine.
If you ask your doctor about this medicine, and the doctor refuses to look at it as a possible alternative to chemicals, then I would find a different doctor. Either the doctor is completely programmed to believe it is not safe, or the doctor has their own self serving interests for dismissing the possibility of using it.
In the last ten years, dealing with my Autistic Son, I have discovered that only the doctors who care about their patients, and not their wallets, will use this alternative first, instead of Pharmaceuticals.
This link will send you to Granny Storm Crow's list of studies that deal with ADD and ADHD, along with others, using this herbal medicine.
I have also seen first hand, the difference this medicine makes in children with problems such as ADD, ADHD, MS, and Autism. I am less and less impressed with the FDA everyday that this medicine is not made available for use. I seriously consider the possibility that it is kept from us on purpose.
Things that have worked with my son have been regular daily routines, one on one attention, and a lot of room to run! I find that love and laughter are the keys to breaking his bad mood swings. We get him to laugh at something, or make a joke.
It is hard when you are on your own. Trust me, as the years go by, it will get easier to communicate with him. Patience, love, and forgiveness will see you through everyday. Trust me on that. Peace and love to you!

The medicines I took (I took both Adderall and Vyvance) made me restless, made me have a poor appitite, and just made me so sedate. I know the point of them is to calm the ADHD person down, but the side effects were not worth it for me. When I stopped my medicine my grades did slip a little bit, and it was a little bit harder to focus on things - however, I felt like me. I do not know if you child has that sense of who he is yet, but I advice against the medicine unless you have to use it.
Lots of exercise and outside activities will help out. Being couped up inside is not the answer. Try to see if you can find a sport that he likes. And I had little descipline, so it is something you have to instill in him as soon as possible, or it will be hard for him to stick with anything. I am currently having that problem now because I have little sense of discipline unless I am EXTREMELY interested in the topic.
And do not give him extra special attention. If he acts out, punish him just like you would a child who is not ADHD. You do need to be a little bit more careful, but if rules are set they must be inforced. I know that I am not a parent, but I grew up with ADHD, so I know a little bit about it. I never went to any therapy at all for my ADHD, and am unsure of if it will help or not. I am sure that it will.
Also, if he does need to take medicine do a lot of research before he starts taking one. Some have negative long term affects (I know that Adderall can cause heart problems later on in life, which is why my parents switched me to Vyvance). But the best advice I can give you is to just get out and have fun with him. I hope this has helped! [ allaboutgay's advice column | Ask allaboutgay A Question ]
