LM answered Thursday May 26 2011, 1:46 pm: I think you're talking about the rhythm method. It's most effective for women who have regular periods, but its effectiveness is significantly lower than other methods such as the pill or condoms. Plus, sperm can live inside of your body for days, so you could have sex, then ovulate a few days later and get pregnant.
Honestly, as a teen your periods are probably still not regular enough to rely on this sort of method. You'd be better off using condoms (which you should be using anyway to help prevent STDs) or a hormonal method such as the pill. Both are highly effective when used correctly, and may fit in better with your lifestyle, too. Whatever method you use, be diligent about using it. Even one slip-up could get you pregnant, and NO method is 100%.
