Ok, so Im 13 and me and my sis got ballons at my cousins graduation and we untied the ballons and strted swallowing the helium so that our voices got all squeaky. It was really funny! But then my great-grandma (97) started yelling at us about how unhealthy that was, and we got in trouble. So im just wondering is that really unhealthy or was she just being fussy?
julie75 answered Friday May 20 2011, 7:50 pm: You're not really swallowing but breathing in the helium instead of air. But to answer your question, yes, it can be bad for you to breathe to much helium. Your heart, brain and lungs need regular air to function. If you deprive your body of air for to long, it can start to shut down. A little bit from a balloon won't do any permanent damage but I wouldn't risk doing any more than that. I hope this helps and good luck. [ julie75's advice column | Ask julie75 A Question ]
