What they want more than anything else is the idea that you understand what they feel. So you don't have to "solve the problem" as such, you just need to basically repeat what is saddening her in your own words. Try to hear not just the words she is saying, but the controlling idea that underlies them. You can also tell her that the compassion she is showing for the protagonist (or whoever is getting crushed by the story's circumstances) in the story is one of the best things about her.
