Hi, I just wanted to ask a question about bass guitars. I have always had a 'thing' for bass guitars. I think that they are awsome so I previously started to go on youtube and looking up ways to learn how to play bass guitars. I have already decided to get a 4 string bass but I don't know what brand to get. Can someone give me a good brand of bass to get and some websites on which I can buy them?? My price range is close to $200 but I can go up to $250 please no more than that. And prefferably I would like it to be all black. Thanks!! I really appreciate it!! P.s. I am currently playing a trombone so would it be a very hard switch??
What you need to do is go into a Guitar Center, Sam Ash or some other shop and play different basses and see which ones are most comfortable and have close to the sound you want. GC has a good sized selection, but I also don't recommend that you buy from them since me and friends of mine have had bad experiences with them.
Once you know what you want, go online and use American Musical Supply or Sweetwater (you don't have to pay sales tax at AMS since they are in Delaware) and order it from them. You will also need a cable to hook your axe up to a bass amp and an amp (you can play electric basses acoustically and while you can hear them, anyone standing more than a few feet away won't be able to). I play guitar, so outside of the Fender Bassman amp, which is out of your price range, I don't know enough to recommend one.
The standard bass for professionals is the Fender Precision bass. So once you get your basic technique nailed you can aim to start saving your money for one.
As far as teaching materials, you can order those from Amazon, though learning under a teacher is usually a better way to go (but a lot more expensive, obviously). There are tab books, which show you what fingers on what string for the basslines in a song, but make sure you read the reviews before ordering so that you can ensure that the transcriptions are accurate. There are a lot of tab books out there which are just straight botch jobs, unfortunately.
The good thing about being a bass player is that you will always be able to find a band to play with because everybody else wants to play guitar or sing. So stick with it. It's fun and totally worth it. [ VoiceofReason's advice column | Ask VoiceofReason A Question ]
