Bikini: Literally just the hair from the bikini line is removed. This means any hair that would show if you were wearing a high cut bikini.
French Bikini: Slightly more hair is removed than with a standard bikini wax. Hair further down will also be removed, the beautician won't go all the way back to the buttocks and hair will be left on the labia.
Brazilian: All hair is removed except for a thin strip at the front, above your labia. There will be no hair left on your labia, underneath or buttocks.
Hollywood: All off. Literally everything.
Personally, I would recommend waxing. It saves the annoyance of having to shave and it leaves you smoother for longer. The good thing about waxing is that the more you do it, the longer regrowth takes and the finer the hair will be when it does come back.
Bikini and French bikini are good places to start as not alot of hair is removed and you can keep your knickers on. The downside is that you will still be left with most of your hair. If you prefer your pubic hair to be at a minimum then you'd probably be more pleased with the results of a Brazilian or Hollywood wax.
With a Brazilian or Hollywood, you will need to strip and spread your legs. Most salons offer paper knickers which the beautician will move around to get to the areas they need to but to be honest, they don't make alot of difference. It is embarrassing at first but you have to remember that the person waxing you is an experienced professional. They do this all day every day and won't bat an eyelid. It always reassures me to know that I won't be the worst they've seen by far.
It DOES hurt. I'd be lying if I said it didn't. Bikini and French bikini waxes are less painful than Brazilians and Hollywoods because the hair is removed from less delicate areas. Taking two Ibuprofen and two Paracetemol (they're safe to take together) 30-45 minutes before your wax will help a little.
A word on regrowth - ideally hair needs to be around 1cm long before a wax. Any shorter and it will be much more painful and the hair will be really difficult to remove.
