ESTAR- location, or when something is changing (ex. mood)
For example, if you're sick, its not a characteristic of your personally, you're only sick AT THE MOMENT.
"I am sick"
"Estoy enfermo"

If you wanted to say "I am tall", you wouldn't use estar, you would use the verb ser because its a characteristic of your personally that remains the same. "Soy alto(a)".

Also you have to use estar in the present progressive tense when you're saying "I am walking", you would say "Estoy andando."

Use "estar" with the acronym HELP:

H - Health (I am sick--Yo estoy enfermo)

E - Emotion (We are sad--Nosotros estamos tristes)

L - Location (He is in Mexico--El esta en Mexico)

P - Present Progressive. A.K.A. english words that end with -ing. (She is swimming--Ella esta nadando)
-AR verbs end with -ando
-ER/-IR verbs end with -iendo
*You probably won't have to use the "P" in "HELP" but, better safe than sorry!
