My girlfriend has a cold sore on her lip. Could she have herpes?
Question Posted Friday December 31 2010, 1:25 pm
Im going to be honest. I have herpes. I got it when I was younger and I had sex with some girls i shouldnt have. So me and my girl have been together for a year. She goes down on me sometimes and gives me head. She knows about the herpes I got and shes seen my sores when I get a outbreak. Two days ago she comes to me and is freaking out cause shes got a coldsore on her mouth and never got one before and read it was herpes. Sooo did she catch herpes from me when she went down on me? I never had a coldsore either though.
Whether she caught it from you or not is not something that can be determined. Herpes is remarkable in that it doesn't show every single month or year. Sometimes people can go 10 or more years without an outbreak. Other times people have an outbreak every month. It varies.
I can tell you that if she went down on you while you had an outbreak then she probably caught it then. You are at your most contagious a week and 1/2 before your outbreak, the entire time you have a sore present, and a full 2 weeks after the sore has healed and gone. If you have frequent outbreaks then, obviously, you're very contagious.
There are two major strains of herpes. They're called HSV-1 and HSV-2.
HSV-1 usually appears on the mouth lips, nostrils, and eyes. It can spread anywhere though, including your genitals. HSV-1 is commonly referred to as oral herpes since it usually appears on the oral cavity.
HSV-2 usually appears on the genitals. It, too, can spread anywhere though, including your face. HSV-2 is commonly referred to as genital herpes since it usually appears on or around the genitals.
You can spread HSV-2 from the genitals to the mouth.
You can spread HSV-1 from the mouth to the genitals.
Your girlfriend may want to go to a clinic and get the sore swabbed and scraped to see if it's HSV-1 or HSV-2 strain. It could make the difference in her outbreaks. HSV-2 is usually worse in the outbreak department than HSV-1. Getting it checked out by a doctor may also open the door for you both to get some treatment to reduce the outbreaks and the discomfort they cause.
Herpes is not curable.
Just remember that she can spread it from her mouth to yours now. If it spreads to your mouth and you engage in oral sex with her then you can spread it to her genitals. This disease can spread all over the body, and you can actually die from it in severe cases so make sure you wash up well and tend to your body when needed.
