Hello i have a 10 month old female toy fox terrier. I've had her since she was a month old. When i go to work we do "doggy daycare" with my mother-in-law and she goes there about 5 days a week for about 8 hours a day then comes home with me. It's always been like this. We recently started to notice that when i leave to go out of town for more than 3 days she gets sick like has diarrhea. But then i take her home and she's completely fine. I have taken her to the vet because i was concerned about her getting sick (this was before we thought its because i leave) and the vet said she was fine. Is it possible for a dog to get upset and sick when their owner is away? If so, would a separation anxiety medicine help at all? I've never heard of this type of thing happening. Thanks for the advice!
Dogs have personalities just like people; I'm sure that you know this. You have the comedians and the serious, the laid back and the anxious. The smaller breeds, to make a generalization, are inclined to be a bit more on the high-strung, anxious side.
You can Google any of these things using the keywords below:
- There is D.A.P. Spray for Dogs
- PetCalm
- Finally, search for "Dog Separation Anxiety" and you'll find good information about the situation.

The vet says you have a healthy dog and their records prove it so it's not that. I'm not sure if an anxiety medicine exists for dogs but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. You would have to consult a vet about your dog's anxiety and sickness when you go away.
The best advice I can give you is to surround her with people you know that can care for her when you are gone. As she learns to trust them she will calm down.
Also diarrhea could be with her diet too. Have you switched food recently or given her a new brand of treat or scraps? There could be something she can't handle with whomever feeds her when away. My dogs are like that.
You better believe that they get anxious when you are are gone and fear you may not return. My dogs love my father but could care less when I go out. I have observed them sitting at the door and just howling until he returns or staring at the door and going ape at any little noise.
I was gone for 3 months twice and my dog went nuts when I returned as did a dog that didn't see it's owner who was in the military for 5 years. They get frightened.
You need to seek your vet's advice and look at idiots guides on dog training to see what you can do to make it easier on the dog when you're gone. They would give the best advice on that as I'm going by experience and not being a trainer. [ solidadvice4teens's advice column | Ask solidadvice4teens A Question ]
