How long does it take for you to know you're pregnant?
Question Posted Sunday November 28 2010, 11:29 pm
So I had unprotected sex about two weeks ago (I know, really stupid) and I wasn't on any birth control. I took Plan B within 4 hours of having sex.
When should I take a pregnancy test? I can't rely on my period because it's always been really irregular (to the point where I'd skip a few months and have up to 2 periods a month).
So please don’t stress too much, just use the stress to remind yourself that although Plan B is great, it’s not something you want to have to rely on!
As Peeps said, you should wait two weeks and take a test. A negative result is quite reliable from a home pregnancy test after three weeks, so by all means continue to take a test each week. If anything else crops up that concerns you or suggests an answer one way or another, see a doctor. But once more: Plan B is quite effective when taken that quickly, and used properly. Peeps answered Monday November 29 2010, 11:08 am: Implantation can occur as early as 7 days after unprotected sex. It will, typically, take another few days before hCG levels begin to actually increase and hormonal fluctuations occur. It can take about another week for enough hCG to increase enough to be detected by an over-the-counter home pregnancy test.
Some women will be able to detect pregnancy hormones very, very early into pregnancy. We're talking on day 9 after unprotected sex a pregnancy test can read out positive.
In rarer cases, some women may go months without seeing a positive pregnancy test result. In high school I knew a girl who had gotten pregnant. Every single urine test she ever took, even near the end of her pregnancy, said negative. We're talking about, her waddling around and everything. Oddly enough, her blood pregnancy tests did show positive for higher hCG levels, so I suppose it's pretty rare to go so long without a positive.
For accuracy sake, take a pregnancy test about 14 days after having unprotected sex. By then the hormonal levels should have increased enough to be able to tell if you're pregnant. If you get a negative result and your period never arrives then you can take a test a week after that up until you feel it's time to see a doctor.
