singing tips and help

Question Posted Thursday November 18 2010, 2:49 am

i love to sing. not in public or anything like that haha just along to the radio and stuff but i know that i'm HORRIBLE at it. i've tried to look up some tips online so that if someone ever heard me sing, i wouldn't make their ears bleed too much, but i don't really understand this concept of head voice and chest voice and how you differentiate between them. and like when people talk about singing out of their nose. i just don't get it. can anyone break this down in a simple version and help me out?

Head voice is like more of the light and airy notes whereas chest voice is more of the deep richer notes. So think Mariah Carey high notes for head voice and Aretha franklin or Christina Aguilera for chest voice. Chest voice comes from pushing air from your stomach and using your ab muscles. Singing out of your nose is unappealing to the ears because is sounds like you've got a blocked nose and a sore throat haha! You know you're doing this when you can feel a pressure in the back top part of your throat or obviously your nose. If you want to sing better I would find songs in your range first and perfect them by recording yourself and listening back and then you can see where you go out of tune and pay special attention to those areas. Also make sure to go on youtube and find some warm up videos before you start to sing so that you don't strain your voice since it is a muscle! Good luck!!! Hope I helped :/ x
