I have a Class B Misdemeanor and can't find a job, Im depressed

Question Posted Thursday November 4 2010, 2:57 pm

I made a great mistake, I have a Class B Misdemeanor for theft. Back in August 2009 I stole a phone, I was so stupid! In April 2010 I activated it, stealing was stupid, but activating it was even more! In May 2010 I have 2 detectives, show up at my house, well of course I had to give them the phone back, they gave it back to the original owner and he still pressed charges. in June I did jailtime, and in August I had court and was given 8mos probation. This was my firsttime to have something like this ever happen! I dont know what I was thinking or what posessed me to do something so irresponsible. I am 19yrs old and My husband and I had to move due to military reasons, I was a CNA before I left and everything was alright, once I moved off to another state I havent been able to find a job! I have not made any real friends. Im so depressed, the last 2 weeks all I want to do is cry! I feel like I cant get out of this slump! I wanted to go to nursing school, I wanted to help people, but I feel like now Im so useless and I'll never get to become a nurse and help people like I wanted to. Im just so lost and everytime I pray or read the Bible I just find myself the next day back in the same boat I have been trying to get out of.

You may be being a little hard on yourself at this time. Yes having a record is cause for an employer to be cautious in hiring you. If you are sincere and open during the interview this will go a long way in helping to over come a juvenile mistake.

At the moment almost 10% of the population is unemployed. This is based on those people receiving unemployment benefits. The number is higher when you include recent graduates and those that have run out of benefits. Some estimate the number of unemployed to be as high as 20% in certain parts of the country.

What I am trying to say is that finding a job at this time the odds are against you even without the misdemeanor offense on your record. Finding a job at this time is a numbers game. The more resumes you send out, the more contacts you make the greater chances you have at finding employment. Do not limit your search to just one career field, widen your search to positions of interest and ones that you may be just slightly qualified for.

In the mean time instead of sitting home feeling sorry for yourself, go back to school. You want to be a nurse go to nursing school or go to paramedic school. Paramedics like nurses are in great demand. You first become an EMT which takes 3 to 6 mos. depending if you go full time or at night. Then after working as an EMT you can go to Paramedic school. Once you are a Paramedic there are programs that allow you to bridge to the nursing degree you want. All of these positions allow you to do what you say you want which is to help people.Emt's are also in demand.

Each state has different requirements and protocols based on a national standard. Find out what the standards are for your state, take the courses required and start a very rewarding career.
