im 16yrs old from the US and i want to move to scotland UK by my self. i dont know anyone over there so ill be totally alone. i heard you can get your own apartment over there at 16. im just wondering how whats it like over there. would there be any problems with the law and my age since im US to UK. i figured id get a minimum wage job. just wondering how old were you when you moved out, did you go far? just any info you can give me on this subject.
Another point about immigration when you are under 18: Legally, in the U.S. you aren't an adult. You aren't legally allowed to sign just about any kind of contract without your parent co-signing it or signing for you directly.
The other thing is this: Unless you are fleeing from a terrorist regime, and are in fear of your life from the government of your home country, most nations won't allow you to immigrate unless you meet a set of guidelines. Basically they want to make sure that you aren't going to be a welfare bum as soon as they let you in. Make sense?
They want a solid job history, a certain net worth (total worth of money you have and things you own outright) and an advanced degree from a reputable college or university in your home country.
Then you need someone on the other side of the pond to sponsor you to come to the UK.
I don't want to discourage you, but what you are asking for is just this side of impossible. :-(
The best way to be absolutely certain is to visit the British embassy nearest you, and talk to their immigration people.
I hope whatever is making you want to flee at 16 gets better soon.
orphans answered Wednesday October 6 2010, 7:36 pm: I'm from the uk- England, not Scotland. I have friends who have moved out at 16, and it is possible. It will be hard though. Getting a minimum wage job is easier said than done in the uk, with the economic troubles the uk faces. I think minimum wage for a 16 year old is £3.57 an hour, which is USD terms is $5ish. It will be hard to find a job, then find a flat (apartment) to suit your needs. Then you will have to pay your rent, tv lisence, any insurance, food and drink, clothing, bills, and loads more!
My friend pays £200 a month for a flat, he gets a bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. That's just for the flat. It really depends on where you go in Scotland e.g. Edinburgh will be more expensive than Glasgow, which will be more expensive than a small town.
You may also find t hard to enter the UK because you have no steady job. The best bet is to look at the Scottish governments website, and other websites about moving to the uk from the US, just google them. :) [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
