If the dog is crate trained then he/she would be able to be left for a little long time without worrying about messing in the house or damaging property.
Dogs are social animals and need to be played with and loved on so once you return home make sure to spend quality time with the dog. Make sure you always, always, always walk the dog at least once before you leave and at least once when you return back home. It's very important that they get enough appropriate potty breaks like this as well as spend a short period bonding out.
It really depends on the dog after a couple of hours. Some dogs will become depressed if left home alone for long periods of time. It depends on his/her personality rather than the breed. You know your dog and how social the dog needs to be for optimal happiness. [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]
Peeps answered Sunday October 3 2010, 7:29 pm: The dog should be walked at least once before you leave the house and at least once after you have returned home. You should spend some time with the dog once you're back home to reassure them that you WILL be coming back when you do leave for school or work. Dogs are very social creatures and it is scary to suddenly be left out of the "pack" even when it's just a "pack" of two animals so makes sure you spend lots of special time with the little guy.
Most dogs will be alright to be home alone for a few hours. Some will have behavioral problems if they're wanting more attention. Some will go potty on the rugs if left too long. If possible, have a friend come over and walk the dog a time or two if you're going to be out more than 4 hours at a time. It is also VERY helpful to crate train the dog so that they don't mess in the house if you're gone for a long period of time and nobody can come over.
It will really depend on WHO the dog is rather than the breed. Some dogs are more tender and need more affection while others are more self-reliant and happy with being alone for a few hours at a time. [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]
