Jobs in Illinois that hire at 14 y.o

Question Posted Tuesday September 28 2010, 8:14 pm

I am a fourteen year old female turning fifteen in December so relatively soon. I want to get a job at like a store preferably or perhaps a movie theatre or ice cream shop.. So if I got a work permit where could I work?

Try some basic things locally first. With the economy the way it is it can be very, very difficult to snag a job at your age. Your competition are 30-something year old professionals in fields with degrees and experience. Even a job at McDonald's can be difficult to get in at because of this.

Try doing the odd jobs around the neighborhood. Try things like:

Babysitting
Mowing yards
Raking leaves
Pet sitting
Pet walking
Grocery shopping for the elderly
Having a yard sale
Washing windows
Painting houses / indoor and/or outdoor
House cleaning / House-sitting

Ask around and see what people are looking for in reference to extra help. There could be something as simple as a man needing an extra pair of hands to move something from one location to another that you could possibly do. Talk with your parents about finding a part-time job for now. See if they have any additional ideas.

If you absolutely must venture out and look for a job in the places you suggested then do just that. Walk right into the store and say, "Hi, are you hiring?" and if they reply, "Yes," then ask about age limits. Many states don't even allow anyone under the age of 16 work anywhere. The employers will be able to talk you through the process and if you make a good impression may suggest when you would be able to come work for them (if you're too young at the moment, of course). You have to be forward, confident, and mature to snag a job nowadays so get to it! ;)
