How to adjust to having lots of homework while being an athlete
Question Posted Tuesday September 21 2010, 6:36 am
I'm a junior in high school btw. Do you think I should skip the volleyball game tonight to do homework? Cause of volleyball I've gotten really behind on homework to the point where I'm failing 3 classes. I know I'm intelligent enough to get As in everything but its just hard because I have to go to volleyball practice at 6 or 7 am and school starts at 8. And then after school most days of the week I have games and they usually last til 8pm. Coming back that late and having to do Honors and Dual Credit classes is crazy especially since I'm not used to that schedule. I took all these hard classes this year that I know I'm smart enough to do but Im having trouble adjusting to. And ugh.. I've already missed one day of school trying to make up homework last week. I am afraid maybe my coach would get mad if I say I want to stay home to do homework but idk.. I have so much to do tonight and I'm soon going to school and I still dont have all my work done cause Im trying to catch up. I dont know what to do.. I cant tell my parents cause they'll make me quit volleyball and I cant imagine quitting cause its my favorite sport.. but in this situation you think I should ask my coach if I could miss the game tonight? Im afraid about consequences though..
Ugh and then even at home I get distracted so easily. Like the day I missed school to do work I ended up barely getting anything done. I've had procrastination issues for years and I deluded myself into thinking I could suddenly overcome them this year and I just feel mad at myself.. like why do I keep doing it! I keep getting distracted and it doesnt help I have less time to do work cause of vball. Like my school year started in August and most days I get 3-6 hours of sleep everyday. Today I got 4 hours of sleep. Its horrible and it just keeps repeating. I fcked up sophomore year with crap like this so how can I fix it this time? Whenever I talk about my issues with this to my parents they dont really help and just make me feel worse.. like when im home i procrastinate to get my mind off things during the day. and if i was stressed out during the day cause i didnt get work done due to procrastination then that just becomes a repeating cycle.
I have big dreams how can I stop procrastinating once and for all. I cant say Im smart when my low grades are saying otherwise cause i cant get my crap together. Im in dual credit (college classes)classes in school so I have access to the college. do you think i should try asking a tutor there or something about my problems too??
thanks so much if you can help

I am a cheerleader and everyday have practice till 6 and games don't end till 8 and competitions... Ughh don't get me started. But I am in love with it, just as with you and volleyball. Don't quit anything... In high school I dropped an AP class that I wish now I didn't because in collage it would cut my classes down. What I did was talked to mycoach. If you talk to your coach about how much homework and everything you have going on he will understand. Go to your game tonight because it's too late to back out now. If you talk to your coach about maybe missing one practice a week, so you don't fail your classes, he should understand. If not say once everyother week. Academics always come before athletics in school, so your coach should understand. He can't do anything to you because you asked! :)
If this does not work with your coach talk to your pricipal. I remember all my teachers worring about me because they knew what I was capable of. In alot of schools if you fail classes you can't be on the team. Hoped this helped, please rate and give me word feedback so I know how I am doing! :) [ kayalark's advice column | Ask kayalark A Question ]
