DirkGently answered Saturday September 11 2010, 6:17 am:
Android is the name of the operating system (basic programming) that was written by the people at Google which (in addition to the phone carrier and the app programmers) makes the phone work. Other operating systems include the BlackBerry OS, Apple's iPhone OS, Microsoft Windows, Apple's MAC OS X, and Linux.

The issue gets confusing because android is often used to refer to specific phone hardware made by Motorola in addition to the programming running on the phone. You can find out more about these phones at the Motorola site.

So the apps made by many different people run on the android operating system made by Google which runs on the phone hardware made by Motorola which connects to the AT&T or Verizon or ... network.

I hope this answers your question.
