I've had a headache for 7 days now and it really sucks. At first it was like a migraine and it calmed down to just a hurting headache pain and now it's back to a migraine and I'm so sick. I don't know why I get headaches but having one for a whole week seems excessive to me. Is this normal to have a headache for more than just 1 day or 2 days? Should I just keep taking aspirin and hope it goes away soon enough?
thelaura answered Sunday September 12 2010, 11:26 am: It's not normal. When something persists without improving for over 3 days, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible. There's so many causes for what you've described, so you need a professional to pinpoint exactly what's going on and to give you the right medicine.
Make that appointment today!
Hope you feel better soon. [ thelaura's advice column | Ask thelaura A Question ]

If you have had significant persistent pain in your head for more than a few days, you should definitely go see a physician.
It is NEVER 'normal' to have headaches. They are always evidence of physical problems like these:
Sleep deprivation (including poor quality of sleep)
Dehydration
Eye strain (low blink rate, fatigued ciliary muscle)
Aural strain (unusually loud or annoying sounds)
Emotional strain
Trauma or exterior pressure on the head
Allergic reaction
Ear, nose, or throat infection
Hypertension (systemic or locally caused by vasoconstriction in the head and neck)
Muscular strain in the head, neck, and shoulders
Hormonal imbalances
Malnutrition
Autoimmune disorders
Tumors
Et Cetera
You need consider the amount and type of pain, any other symptoms, how often this occurs, and what it might be related to in your environment.
If the pain is significant enough for it to cause problems with your daily life and/or you believe it could be an indication of something serious you should seek medical care.
You should never accept headaches as normal. If something in your actions or your environment is causing them (this is generally the case for headaches) then you need to correct it. [ DirkGently's advice column | Ask DirkGently A Question ]
ttaayylloorr answered Friday September 10 2010, 10:56 pm: Having a headache for one week straight is not normal, however if it is a migraine asprin is not good to take. My mom is known to get migraines every so often and asprin makes them worse, as well as makes them last longer. Try switching to a different medicine and if it doesnt go away within the next couple of days go see a doctor. It could be the asprin making them last longer, or it could be something else. So if the change of medicine does not make it go away within a couple of days I would deff. see a doctor.
