With dirt roads and new cities and towns that weren't very developed, you had to dress according to the weather. Since most of the country enters the rainy/snowy season after September, the rule was to never wear white after labor day, because it would get dirty with the changing weather. When the weather warmed up again and became more pleasant (usually in May, around Memorial Day) people could put their favorite whites on again. Of course, these days we don't have to worry about such things, so the old rules about wearing white after labor day don't apply anymore. Only older folks adhere to that anymore.
