Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Question Posted Thursday July 29 2010, 6:46 pm

Hi Im in between 10-14 (I dont wanna say my real age) and female. Im highly sure that I have a Generalized Anxiety Disorder but Im afraid to and dont know how to tell my Mom and I cant tell my Dad or Step-Mom cause they dont even believe that I have asthma (and I do) But everytime I say like I dont feel good or my asthma is getting a little worse (which it kinda is) then she just rolls her eyes like Im being a hypercondriac (same with my Dad) and Im not old enough to go to the doctors by myself and I dont even want to go to the Doctors cause Ive been there lots of times for other non mental issues. How do I handel this before school starts again?!

Hi Sweetie,
I have GAD, too, and it's just what it is: a problem you're having that's preventing you from living your life with the freedom a 10-14 year old should have.

You need to sit your parents down and tell them your symptoms; get your facts from the internet and print them out and TELL THEM/SHOW THEM that THIS is how you feel and as your parents, they need to address the situation and get you on some meds or therapy or SOMETHING before you end up being miserable all the time.

You can do it; your life depends on YOU standing up for YOU!

Facing your fears helps, but that is sometimes easier said then done. Try talking to other family members about it (preferably ones that are supportive). If you can find help within your family, try talking to the school nurse or maybe a close friend's parents. They may be able to help you!

Therapy and medication are the most common cures for anxiety. I also have anxiety disorders, but I never received help for it. Try mastering it with your mind. Ignore it, defeat it, fight it, and face it. Talk about it to loved ones.

Also, reason with yourself. When something makes you anxious, use logic and reason to see why that situation shouldn't make you nervous, apprehensive, afraid, etc. Often the fear and apprehension is irrational and if you rationalize through it and realize its not something to fear, it will help you.
