I want to start an exercise routine

Question Posted Friday July 23 2010, 11:43 am

Hey in 19/f and I'm 5'7 and weigh 144 lbs. I want to become more in shape, tone up my legs mostly and start eating healthy. The only problem i have is that i have no motivation at all to exercise. When i get home from work i'm always too tired and have other things i need to get done around the house. Can anybody give me any encouraging words of advice to make me want to exercise? Also is there a certain exercise routine i should stick to and how long should i do it and how many days a week? Anything would be helpful! Thanks everybody and i do rate.

-Ashley

Hello Ashley,

I know a lot of people who feel the same way you do. If you are to tired then you have to keep a journal of things that must get done and do them. This time include exercising as one of them. Also you may look into doing interval training as this form of exercise only takes about 20 minutes to complete a full workout. Interval training can be done on a treadmill, elliptical or outside. I suggest running stairs if you live in an apartment building or close to a track with bleachers. here is a great article with a routine <a href="[Link](Mouse over link to see full location) stairs</a>

You can also look at changing your diet since at 5'7 and 144 lbs you shouldn't have that much weight to lose. Simply making some changes in how you eat can affect you more than working out. The amount of calories you put in makes a big difference.

I'm going through exactly what you are right now. The only piece of advice I can give you is that if you really want to start doing this, you have to mentally force yourself to. Make a commitment of how many times a week you want to work out and do it, no excuses. I think the best thing you can do is when you go home, the moment you walk through the door, put your workout clothes on. This will motivate you to go work out. This way you won't start doing anything around the house, or what I tend to do, sit down and not want to get back up. You are the only person that can make yourself workout, you just have to commit. I can tell you my workout routine during the week. It varies for everyone. I run after work every day, so 5 days a week. It relieves a lot of stress for me and surprisingly enough I have tons of energy afterwards. Biking is also a great way to ton your legs. I do sit ups in the morning and at night because I'm trying to ton my stomach. I have Billy Blanks taebo workout video and on days that I have free time on my hand that I find myself sitting around doing nothing, I will pop that video in and follow along right in my living room. Let me tell you that is one hardcore routine. You don't have to go to a gym to workout and I think that for me that's what helps make it easier to work out. I can walk out my front door and just run. I don't have to get in my car and go anywhere and I'm not staring at a treadmill as the amount of time scrolls by on the screen. I find that deters me from running more whereas running in my neighborhood I have no knowledge of time. I hoped some of this helped. Like I said before, you have to motivate you, find what works for you, and just stick to it.

I am in the same boat as you. I work a lot, get home late, and don't have motivation to exercise most of the time. Technically, I get loads of exercise at work but that's because I run around with little kids at a day camp all day. But still, you need to "WOMAN UP" and start exercising!haha just kidding. If you want to tone up your legs try doing some squats against a wall and also walk up and down the stairs a lot [stairs will make your calves look amazing]when you get to the top step, stand on your tippy toes for five seconds. 15 minutes of exercise a day would be a great start for you, and every week at 15 minutes more. A way you can be more motivated is by having a family member or friend join you in exercising! Hope I helped! Let me know if you need any more tips!
