Oh crap.. I think I made her pregnant

Question Posted Friday July 9 2010, 9:58 pm

I'm an idiot

I've been seeing this girl, and we had sex couple nights ago but unprotected, and I came.

I pulled out straight away afterwards thinking of how stupid I am, and I told her what happened. Thankfully she takes half the blame on herself as well..

Anyway, this was about 2am.. and 12 hours later she went into town and got a pill.

I'm still quite nervous though, she doesn't track her periods so she won't now if she is late or not.

She said she will take a test anyway and I told her to get another pill tomorrow (that would be within the 72 hours still)

what can i do?

You had amazing advice already, I just wanted to add a little to it.

I am assuming the pill you are talking about is the Plan B emergency contraceptive. That's good, and it will significantly lower the chances of a pregnancy. There is also a chance that she wasn't ovulating at the time. You shouldn't automatically assume she is pregnant, because there is a pretty good chance that she isn't.

The best thing I can tell you to do is be there for her this following month. Support her, be there for her, and try not to get to upset until you know for sure. Tell her to take a pregnancy test in about 30 or so days. If it comes back negative, and she still hasn't started in a couple more weeks, tell her to take another one.

Learn from this situation. If you are going to continue seeing this girl, be sure you use condoms everytime, and talk to her about going on the birth control pill.

Good luck!

Pray for a healthy child? Might be a good time to start saving some money for child raising. And while at that, attend a parenting course and a child-development course, too. Oh, also, go to your doctor and ask for prenatal care; that would be good. You know, take the responsibility and be show that care for your sweetheart more than anything else, support her with life, etc. :-)

My apology for the lines above. Surely that wasn't what you wanted to hear. But you know, that's pretty much all that the man can do after ejaculated inside her. Whatever happens from that point on, happens inside her body, which means there is little you can do to significantly change it, except to do whatever you can to keep her happy and less stressful.

Anyhow, don't beat yourself over it. Accidents happens; what's done is done. You can only support her now; she's the one who will have to do the real works. Also, just because you came inside, doesn't mean there's 100% that she's pregnant, not to mention that she's on Plan B soon after.

Sperms can survive up to 3 to 5 days (max) in the woman's body, in good condition; while the ovum can only survive 12 to 24 hours (max). Also, how old is she? Women are generally born with one to two million follicles (immature eggs), but throughout her entire lifetime, only about 400 of those two millions will ever become matured eggs (or ova [ova is plural form of ovum]). If she's above 50, you have little to worry about. Okay, this is definitely NOT the case, but hey, you never told us her age.

(Next time, age matters. Please do tell us in your question.)

What she can do at this point is go for emergency contraceptions (ECs) and pregnancy tests, which it seems like that you've already done them. But here's a quick run down of the two and how to use them most effectively:

The morning-after pill (abbreviated as ECP) that she has taken is one of the EC methods. It offers 75% effective rate; that's fairly high, but of course, that means there's about 25% failure rate.

IUD is another one, but it requires corporation from a doctor, which you might not have and it's not very popular either. So let's skip this.

Also, there is a new EC (emergency contraception) that just came out, called "Ella" (Ulipristal Acetate). While the ECPs are only effective up to 72 hours after, Ella offers 120 hours after (which is about 5 days). It has been around in Europe for quite a while, but the US's FDA (Food/Drug Administration) have NOT approved it . . . yet; so it is as of now (as of the day I type this post, which is July 10, 2010) unavailable in the USA . (The FDA's experts voted unanimously 11-to-0 that it's all right to use, but the final decision won't come out until around the end of July at the earliest, might be later than that.) Nevertheless, depending on where you live and the availability of this, you might want try this out.

(Next time, please do tell us your location, at least the country that in which you live in, not just the planet :-) .)

========================
As for home pregnancy test, if you take it soon after you have sex, the result is likely to be false. (And yes, the damn advertisement of 99% correct after 1 day is a big, fat lie!)

For accuracy, home pregnancy tests are to be taken one week AFTER she has missed her supposed-to-happen period; then take the test once again a week later. Now, in this case, she never tracked her periods, so I suggest you talk to her and take an educated guess somewhere to perform the test. If it comes out negative, wait one to two weeks later, then take another test. If it is another negative, wait for another week, then take another test, just to make sure. After that, just watch for pregnancy symptoms.

If any of the test comes out positive, visit a doctor. Heck, negative or positive, it's best to visit a doctor for an accurate test. But, you know, if money is the matter or whatever other reason that prevent you from visiting a doctor, when any of the home pregnancy tests comes out positive, just swallow your pride and embarrassment and visit a doctor--pay in payments if you have to. The earlier you two start your plan to care for the baby, the healthier and better both for the mother and baby it becomes. I cannot stress this enough.

Good luck!
