I have been taking a multivitamin for about two weeks now (One a day Women's) and it makes me extrememly nauseous. I didn't put two and two together until recently, and since I discovered I only get sick after taking the vitamin, I decided to only take it with meals. This morning I took it after eating a bowl of soup, and now I feel incredibly sick. I am also feeling dizzy and light headed, and I can't help but think the vitamin is what's causing this.
I need to take vitamins, because I definitely don't have a well balanced diet. My gyno also told me that if I ever plan on having kids, I need to start taking a multivitamin and folic acid now so my children don't have birth defects later on.
The only other medication I take is birth control (Gianvi, the generic form of YAZ), and a store brand allergy pill.
Peeps answered Friday July 2 2010, 9:48 pm: It's fairly normal but it usually happens in pregnant women.
Try changing brands and the time of day you take the multivitamin. A lot of people have great success with taking it right before they sleep. The body absorbs the nutrients and by the time you wake up all of those nauseous feelings never had time to process and make you violently ill.
Sometimes low-grade vitamin brands will cause reactions like this because the vitamins they contain aren't readily absorbed by the body.
Always take it with some food or a full glass of milk. It will help your body to absorb it better and make you less sick. Try having some toast with it or, as I just suggested, some milk.
You may want to start taking a prenatal vitamin if you're wanting to get pregnant. They are great for pregnant women and women who are planning to become pregnant within the next 6 to 8 months. They have a great amount of folic acid and other goodies that pregnant women absolutely need.
As you can see, they list some of their choices on the vitamins it contains to help the body absorb them better.
You may also want to pick up some acidopholus capsules. They really help to get intestines lined out and help the body to break down vitamins properly. A lot of women report sick feelings going away from taking vitamins when they've been taking these probiotics supplements as well. (Don't take the acidopholus with any sort of antibiotic since they will just cancel out).
My husband really likes Jarrow Formulas Jarro-Dophilus+ FOS:
You might want to look around online for a better grade of multivitamin. Many big-chain stores don't carry the best grades. Make sure you read reviews about the product before your purchase. The Maxi Health Maxi One Prenatal reviews are pretty decent and some women even reported "no ill feelings" when taking these compared to other brands. VitaCost, especially, has lots of information like this so try a few until you find what best fits your body. [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]
