does cold water make your hair shiny

Question Posted Friday June 4 2010, 5:21 am

Do you know if it is true that if you wash your hair in cold water it will make it shinier?

Have YOU tried it and does cold water make your hair shiny for real?

Thank you!

I rate!

You don't have to wash it in cold water, but a cold rinse once you've finished washing/conditioning does make your hair shinier. Cold water seals the hair follicles so that they lie flat, meaning they reflect the light better - which is why your hair looks shinier.

Similarly, a blast of cold air after blow-drying your hair has the same effect.

My hairdresser told me to do this:

As soon as i get in, wash my hair with shampoo, as usual. Rinse it, then put conditioner in my hair. and DONT rinse it, then finish doing whatever you need to do, Wash your body, shave your legs, etc. THEN right before you get out, change the water to as cold as you can stand it, and wash the conditioner out. It's supposed to make it shinier, and stronger. and it closes the protein and stuff from the conditioner, whereas hot water just lets it out.

Hope I helped(:

I've heard that it's true.
I tried rinsing my hair which is thin and naturally wavy with cold water once to see what effect it would have, but it actually made my hair less shiny. I don't know why, but my hair is always more shiny when I use hot water and a hot setting on my blow dryer. I think it really depends on the type of hair that you have.
If you want to be sure, try it for yourself and see what effect it has on your hair.

"Rinsing hair with cold water closes the cuticle, leaving a smooth, shiny surface. Blasting with cold air after a blow-dry has a similar smoothing effect, and most dryers have a cold setting for this purpose." - Bazaar Magazine.

This is true, the cold water is less drying than hot water. It's best to wash your hair with hot water, in order to get it nice and clean, then do a quick cold rinse on your hair to boost shine.

You know I have been to a beautician that gave my hair a cold rinse after washing with shampoo and Conditioner. My hair did feel and look shiny. Now I have heard it really just sets your hair. In other words it is good to wash your hair with luke warm water then condition it and give it a cold rinse, really it takes the heat out when your taking a shower. I personally have heard that it is a good thing to do. It's kind of like when you blow dry your hair and your styling it, you hit the cool button to set it. Yes I have tried it and it could have been a coiencidense but it made my hair shiny.
