bellybutton..gross sorry

Question Posted Tuesday May 25 2010, 9:37 am

I"ve had my bellybutton pierced since september, and since then I haven't had any problems with it. But now I have a cut in the middle of the piercing..so its right above my belly button, but under the top ball of the ring. sometimes a clear fluid comes out of the cut, so i'm worried that it is infected, but i don't know if this means that i should take the piercing out or not.

If any piercing you ever get becomes infected, NEVER take the piercing out. That is the worst thing you can do. If you take the piercing out, the skin will heal with the infection still very much present. This can cause a very nasty absess that will need surgery to be removed.

With that being said, it doesn't really sound like an infection, just because clear fluid is usually nothing to worry about. Green and yellow pus are usually indicators of an infection.

I don't really know what you mean by a "cut" but either way around that doesn't sound good. Continue cleaning it with whatever your piercer told you to use, and if it is red, irritated, painful, warm to the touch, oozes yellow or green pus, or doesn't improve over the next couple weeks, go see your piercer and they will tell you what you need to do.
