Hi I am a 19 year old college student and I've noticed that whenever I eat a fiberOne bar a few hours later I get really bad stomach aches. I was just wondering if you knew why this happens? Thank you!

ConfusedX2 answered Friday May 7 2010, 12:18 am: Basically, our bodies can not digest fiber. These granola bars are high in fiber (obviously). The reason fiber is good for you is because when the fiber is moving through your digestive system, it is essentially abrading the lining of your intestines. In other words, it cleans out the bad stuff and moves digestion along more quickly (this is why you poop more when you eat a lot of fiber).
Not to be gross but it could also be gas. Bacteria in the colon can partially digest the fiber, and the gas is a byproduct of digestion.
Your body may adjust to the recent increase in fiber consumption, and it may gradually go away. If you don't want to wait, just try something with less fiber and build up to eating more fiber every day. [ ConfusedX2's advice column | Ask ConfusedX2 A Question ]
