Okay, I'll try to keep this short but I don't want to miss the details..
I'm 15 (f) and my family and i recently moved to another town. my new bedroom is a lot smaller then my last. my room is about 9 ft. by 13 ft. i think.. anyways, it's a bastement room, so it has this legde about half way up my wall, going around my room. I also have 2 large windows.
Well, i'm really interested in re-decorating! I want it to look nice. Saphisticated, but still trendy. I was thinking of grey and yellow on the walls.. maybe a white a black bedspread? I don't know how i could do it though,
does anyone have suggestions?
How can I paint the ledge also?
like.. ex, should I paint the bottom half a different colour than the top?.
Should I go for a brighter room? or darker?
Do you know of any good websites that show ideas?
and, does anyone know of websites that have cheap, trendy furnitre?
In order to design your room you need to come up with a color palette of 3 colors. The main color for the walls, and two accessory colors that complement the main color. Because your room is small and is in the basement, the ceiling is probably lower than normal, and the lighting is not as bright, because the windows are higher up on the walls closer to the ceiling. So your main color choice should be rather light, because darker colors tend to make the room appear smaller. Some good neutral color choices would be a real light grey- which will make the room feel soothing and calming, or light beige/brown- which would make the room appear warmer and cozy. Choosing the mood you wish to have in your room will help you decide on your color.
Because the wall has a ledge it allows you to paint a two-tone. The best way to do this is whatever color choice you choose for the wall use that color only a few shades lighter for the top half. The upper part of the wall is closest to your ceiling and windows, so you want it to be lighter than the bottom half. Just keep the color choice the same color, just lighten the shade. Too much contrast will make your room appear broken up and smaller.
From there is the accessory color palette. Turquoise, Lime Green, and Black- Mixes bright and bold with sophisticated, Burghandy, Black and White- very warm and contemporary, or Yellow and Navy blue- which adds more of a contrast between the colors, making the mood of the room inspiring. Again, make your accessory color choices based on the feel that you want for your room.
Now what I mean by accessories is bedding, pillows, chairs, dressers, night stands, desk, picture frames, etc. For any of the color choices I gave above, the furniture should stay one color- Black or Dark Brown. This uniforms the design and allows the two other color choices in your accessory palette to stand out.
Bedding can have all of the color choices either in patterns, or combining it with pillows. For example: All Black bedding, with turquoise and lime green throw pillows, or Black and turquoise bedding with circles, and green throw pillows. From there you can pull those colors around the rest of your room, with a nice area rug of ONE of those colors (preferably no patterns just one solid color), candles, picture frames, pencil holder, etc. all alternating with those color choices.
Just be creative with your accessory and furniture choices. Wall decals are a great way to incorporate your accessory color choices on the wall also. If you have any more questions feel free to message my inbox! [ LiLReBeL6907's advice column | Ask LiLReBeL6907 A Question ]
