i think something from a different language is usually the cutest. make sure its something simple and you can pronounce. it can mean sweetheart or any english pet name but i think it adds a little something if its in a different language. :)

i don't really understand the whole "petname" thing. whats wrong with the names our parents picked for us?
anyways, off topic, you should find something attractive about your boyfriend that you like. guys usually like it if you call them "daddy" or some shit, because it makes them feel like an alpha male. but going on about the attractive thing, heres an example: my boyfriend has really pale, clear skin, so i call him dollface because he reminds me of a porcelain doll. or if he kisses you a lot, call him pucker. XD idk. just be creative with it. come up with a name of your own. don't rely on "baby" and "honey" or "sugar". those are all cliches and old and gross. does he hug you a lot? call him "teddy". is he always making jokes or laughing? call him "bobo" (as in bobo the clown) like i said, have fun with it and be creative.
orrrr....as an afterthought, you could call him by his own name :) that works everytime.

Sweetheart, no one knows your boyfriend as much or as well as YOU, or feels what YOU feel as much as YOU! In order to get a really good nickname for your boyfriend, it should just come about. Don't force it or rush it. Is there some way you identify him with? Be it a sport or anything? A memory that you both share dearly or even a stupid random word you both came up with one day when you were hanging out together. I believe names mean a whole lot more, especially nicknames because that is something only two people understand, at first, until friends start asking why he's called that or whatever..
SO I suggest you think about something that HE is special to you for or makes him special as a person, and it doesn't even have to make sense, that is the beauty of nicknames and having a sweet memory behind it. Names like 'baby, babe, honey etc.' are SO common.. Add some spice to the relationship, and he will remember you for long, for calling him that cute name that was linked to an awesome memory you both shared! ;)
