Why should I take a guy when I go car shopping?

Question Posted Monday March 22 2010, 2:08 am

I am going to go buy my first car with the money I've been saving up and my dad insists that I take him with me for a "better" deal. I kept telling him that they're going to give me a fair deal just like they give everybody else REGARDLESS OF GENDER and that I can go alone if I want to. He keeps saying how the salesman will see I'm a woman and will shoot the price up and that I won't know what to look for under the hood or during the test drive. I think I will know if something doesn't sound right or doesn't work though.

Why should I take a man along to a car dealership anyway? I just don't get his point. I think he's making too big of a deal out of this? I don't think they're going to say, "Hey! It's a chick...let's rip her off!" I mean, WHY would they even do something like that?! Doesn't make sense!

You don't necessarily need to take a "guy" with you.
But, unless you know a lot about cars, you need to take along someone who does. Unfortunatley, there are many, many businesses who will take advantage of anyone who they feel they can. Your dad is right about that. Its a great opportunity for them to make some money on a piece of crap that may look nice, but is mechanically a mess. Its not nice at all, but they do it everyday.

If you don't want to take your dad along take a mechanic at the very least. Someone who can help
you negotiate a better deal is good too. If you know what you are looking for, go online to Kelly blue book and see what your the car you want is actually worth. Most banks won't loan you more than that price.

I've only gone to buy a car one time. If dad comes along you can do what I did. Go to the lot
and start looking at a car that isn't your first choice but is in the same price range. When the salesman came out and started giving a line about that car, I left my husband to talk with him and went to look at the car I really wanted. When I went back and was asked what do you think of this car? I said well, I'd like you to come see this one (the one I really wanted). Worked like a charm!

A lot of car dealerships will give good deals regardless of gender, but I have been to a few who see a girl alone and try to rip her off because girls usually don't know a whole lot about cars. But, in all honesty, I always take a guy with me to car dealerships for that very reason. They know more about cars than me, so they would spot problems a lot quicker than me. Plus, some car problems aren't immediately noticeable, so it's always nice to take someone who knows something about cars with you.
