Movie extra. When I was a kid, I was signed with a modeling agency. Sometimes, my mom would actually take me to my job offers, where I got to star in movies / tv shows as an extra.
I'm 18 now, and I want to do it again. My question is, does one NEED an agency to hook them up with these jobs? If not, where can I find out about them and what necessary steps do I have to take?

You need a BACKGROUND TALENT AGENT to be an extra in films. The only time you don't is when it's an open-call for extras.
This agent is the ONLY agent besides one that specializes in kids/teens that can charge a small fee for representing you because people often bail on them when they see that this is 18 hrs work quite often. Run from any other agent who tries to.
All you need is simple snapshots to begin with that they can color copy. You're pretty much set. If anyone tries to sell you on a portfolio or putting photos on the Internet bail. It's a classic scam and NO director or casting director uses the Internet to find talent.
To ensure that you aren't ripped off go to SAG's web site in America or ACTRA in Canada and ask them for a list of reputable agents in your area. If an agency isn't on that list there's a reason and be sure not to sign.
If I were you I would make sure you have a wide range of wardrobe ready including casual, semi-formal and formal as you never know what they want you to wear and often call less than 12 hours before you are supposed to be at set. It's always that random. ]
No, you can become a extra without any experience or representation. I don't know where you live, but usually local newspapers will post them in the classifieds (jobs) section. There are websites that do this too, but some are scams so be careful. I know that this website ( [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) ) often posts about being an extra, but its all over location-wise. Being a part of an agency may increase the opportunities, but it really isn't necessary.
From what I know, when you sign up to be an extra, they have a process where you send in your information (not sure if it requires an actual resume & headshot type deal...) and then they choose.
i found this on a website ([Link](Mouse over link to see full location)) "The service is Moviex.com and it's the most respected online extras casting company."
good luck!!! ]
