colleges in NYC

Question Posted Monday March 1 2010, 11:12 pm

Can someone just give me a list of colleges possibly links of colleges in NYC that are good majors for psychology and preferably not too hard to get into but anything is fine, really. You're helping me out so much. Thanks :)

Barnard. [www.barnard.edu] This is a great school, but hard to get into. Also an all-girls school. On the plus side, it is right across the street from Columbia, where Barnard students can take classes.

Speaking of Columbia, [columbia.edu] they have a psych major as well. Being an Ivy, it's RIDICULOUSLY hard to get into. However, I'd still recommend applying. You never know (especially if you're a minority). The campus is absolutely beautiful and one of my teachers studied psych there and loved it.

CUNY Brooklyn College [www.brooklyn.cuny.edu]

CUNY CSI. [www.csi.cuny.edu]

CUNY Baruch [www.baruch.cuny.edu]

CUNY Hunter [www.hunter.cuny.edu]

CUNY CCNY

... pretty much all the CUNYs offer psychology, really. I would recommend looking into Hunter (it's a great school, even if it's a city college). All the CUNYs are ridiculously easy to get into. I know someone with a 77 average that got into all the CUNYs she applied to.

I would recommend looking into the Macaulay Honors Program and seeing if they offer a psychology major. This is a great program; if you've never heard of it, it is an honors program at some CUNY schools. You study at your school of choice, take advanced classes, but you also pretty much get PAID to go to school (an annual $1500 check, i believe), and you get a Macbook. The application is extremely easy to fill out (there's two essays, but it's no big deal) and I would say it's definitely worth it. The downside to applying here is that you can only pick ONE CUNY school to apply to (this is because not all Macaulay schools offer the same majors). When you apply, in February they let you know if you made it into your CUNY school of choice. If you have, they consider you for the honors program and let you know in March. If not, you can still attend the school and get your psych degree.

NYU also offers psychology. I can't comment on how hard it is to get into because that depends on the particular school you apply to. For example, only 50% - 75% of kids in my school got into NYU Stern, but EVERYONE got into NYU Poly.

St. John's University.

SUNY Stony Brook. Also ridiculously easy to get into. This, along with SUNY Binghamton, was the safety school for everyone I know. They do have an honors program, however. And they accept the National Merit Scholarship.

These aren't ALL of the schools in NYC. Because in NYC there is some sort of school every couple of blocks (on downtown Broadway, the High School of Economics and Finance is right across the street from some other high school). If you want to look into more, take a look at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Scroll to where it says "COLLEGE SEARCH" and click on "find your match". Fill out the fields (you don't have to fill them all out, just the ones important to you - like the major, location, etc) and press "view results".

I'd also recommend speaking to a college / guidance counselor. They tend to know a LOT about which colleges will offer you the best programs for the major you're looking for.
