ideas for school newspaper article?

Question Posted Wednesday November 11 2009, 5:19 pm

Guess what? I am stuck for an idea for an article for our school newspaper. I volunteered thinking it would be easy but I can't think of a thing to write about in our school paper.

Does anyone here write for their school paper? Did you in the past? Any ideas for me?

Please and thank you!

How about starting a regular appearing article in which you answer questions about your school? Something like "Ask the Eagle." Of course you could substitute the name of your mascot for "eagle." You could advertise it on some posters or closed circuit TV in your school. No one even has to know you are answering the questions. You could have them ask questions through email or by dropping a question in a box in the office or something. Make sure question askers know that the questions have to be about your school itself, not personal questions about students or staff.

If this doesn't appeal to you.....what about a different kind of Ask/Answer column? Just a thought.

i'm not on the newspaper staff but our staff writes about things like recently they had an article about our school spirit. the headlines were "is our school too cocky about our sports? or do we just have a tremendous amount of school spirit?" and they just basically described how our students are always dressed up for football games and yelling and cheering their friends on and getting rowdy and how other schools think we are stuck up in our sports, but really we are just proud. another article was about how our school started to take away the fattening foods, like the icing on our scones. they took polls of what people thought. who liked the idea and who didnt. etc. they interviewed the health department of our school staff and questioned them why they chose to become health concious this year. there's another section on fashion and whats the new school fashion trend. right now its basically scarves, ugg boots, college sweatshirts, purses etc.

so yea, just pick a random topic and brainstorm with ideas, interviews, lead stories etc.

take a extra second when you walk around your school and recognize the small stuff. if you see a kid litering, start an article about that and how unfair it is to the janitors who have to pick up after us everyday afterschool. if you see a mysterious room that you've never been in or seen, try researching it and talking to staff and see what's in there. If you hear about a teacher retiring, talk to them and ask them why they are etc.

good luck :)
