In preparation for university, I've decided to expand my kitchen repertoire and cook a new dish at least once a week. I own countless recipe books but I thought it'd be interesting to find out what everyone's all time favourite dish is. So what is your favourite meal? If possible a link to a recipe would be great.

Ignatz answered Monday November 9 2009, 4:41 pm: For me, anything braised is a good thing. Any tough cut of meat cooked very slowly in a small amount of liquid until it just about falls apart is the perfect meal. The tough cuts tend to be the cheapest ones as well. Turkey legs, beef chuck roasts, ham shanks, pork hocks, chicken thighs and legs, all work well in braises. If you don't have one already, look into a crockpot. You can set it up in the morning, go to class all day, and in the evening dinner's ready. A crock pot is also good for soups, especially bean or split pea soup.
A simple meal is Cuban ropa vieja: take some chuck or bottom round steak, maybe 2-3 pounds, and brown it in a skillet. Take the meat out and set it aside. Slice a large bell pepper into strips and a large onion into rings, then saute them in the pan along with some garlic and parsley. When the veggies are soft, add a small can of tomato puree. Cook for a few more minutes, then pour half of it in the crockpot. Put the meat on top of that, then pour the rest of the sauce over. Add a little water, or some orange juice mixed half-and half with lemon juice, then let it cook for about four hours on high or eight hours on low. The meat should be very tender and should fall apart when you poke it with a fork. Pull the meat apart into shreds with a fork and mix it all up with the sauce.
